History

Mariposa County was formed on January 4, 1850, with the

other 17 founding counties of California. At the time of the

founding of California, Mariposa County was the largest

county in comparison to; San Bernardino County, San Luis

Obispo County, and Tulare County. For this reason,

Mariposa County is also referred to as "Mother of Counties".

The name of the county comes from Mariposa Creek, an

area that was named 1807 by Spanish explorers when they encountered a large butterfly population (span. Mariposa = butterfly).
